AbstractArticle that gives a short history of The Independent magazine. It was started in 1899 by George Creel and Arthur Grissom as a political magazine. Ten years later two women, Katherine Baxter and Clara E. Kellogg bought it and dropped the political side. The magazine has missed only one issue, in 1947, when the typographers' union was on strike.
