Natives of Kansas City, Bloch and his brother Richard started H&R Block in 1955, running advertisements in the newspaper to do personal tax returns for five dollars. Since retiring in 2000, Bloch has devoted more of his time to philanthropy, raising funds and promoting projects for institutions such as St. Luke's Hospital, the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, and the Bloch School of Management at UMKC. |
