| Title | August Meyer |
| Abstract | References to and descriptions of August Meyer (1851-1905), or A. R. Meyer, as "capitalist and leader in matters of public improvements" and as one of the three most important developers of Kansas City's park and boulevard system along with George Kessler and William Rockhill Nelson. Native of Saint Louis coming to the Kansas City area in 1881 as a wealthy lead mine investor and smelting executive, then becoming president of the park board in 1892 and later the Commercial Club. |
| Notes | He is considered the father of Kansas City's park and boulevard system because it was during his term as president of the city's Park Board that the system was planned. Mayor Benjamin Holmes appointed him president of Kansas City's first Park Board in March 1892. Kansas City's Meyer Boulevard was named for him after his death (sometime [sic] during the period December 1905-1908). The street's first entry in the city directory is in the 1913 edition ("Meyer Parkway"). |
