Title12th Street, 300 Block, East
DescriptionPostcard of 12th Street, 300 Block, East
Historical ArticleThe 12th Street scene of 1909, looking west, shows street car tracks, horse and wagon traffic and early-day establishments. It was taken to publicize a 300-block festival, and banners were hung overhead with the numerals 300.

Actually the 400 block is in the foreground, the block now occupied by the Jackson County Courthouse and the City Hall. Today street car tracks have been removed and the street widened. Traffic is one-way east.

A 1909 city directory identifies occupants of the block as White Sewing Machine Co., 423 E. 12th, George M. Hughes, mgr.; Japanese Store; Furnished Rooms, Emil Scharnagel, 417 E. 12th, (later that year the building became the Lee Hotel, with Gussie D. Pratt, manager); Postcards, 411 E. 12th, Samuel Kaplan. On the other side of the street was Pool, 416 E. 12th and the Newport Billiard Hall, 414 E. 12th, with Edw. J. Maloney and Bernard A. Fitzsimmons proprietors of both. A large sign advertised Milwaukee Beer and the Golden West Hotel, 412 E. 12th. An over-the-sidewalk sign shows the nightly hotel rate to be 75 cents.
