| Description | Postcard of the American Legion Fountain |
| Historical Article | The American Legion fountain, dedicated Nov. 3, 1921, at Ninth and Main, is pictured on an old post card published in black and white in France, by Jno. Straley.
The dedication ceremonies took place at the time of the American Legion convention in Kansas City which was attended by 60,000 veterans and the five military leaders of World War I: Foch, Beatty, Jacques, Diaz and Pershing.
Robert Merrell Gage, Kansas City sculptor, designed the stone memorial and fountain. Gage's design includes bronze insets of doughboys of World War I in action, recessed into a pillar topped by four stern eagles.
Today the memorial is located at the Budd Park Esplanade, on the east side of Van Brunt Boulevard at Anderson. A list of Kansas City American Legion Posts named for men who gave their lives is on the monument, but time and erosion have made deciphering difficult. The Liberty Memorial administrator, Maurice Kelso, said the inscription appears to be as follows:
Dedicated by Kansas City to the American Legion Posts, October 31 --November, 1921.
William T. Fitzsimmons, Murray Davis, William J. Bland, Joseph Dillon, Arthur Maloney, Sanford M. Brown Jr., James Cummins, Joseph Liebman, Hewitt Swearingen, Wayne Minor.
