St. Mary’s Episcopal Church was organized in 1857 under the name St. Luke’s. The name was changed in 1879 to St. Mary’s Episcopal Church, and it absorbed St. George’s congregation in 1989. Since its beginning, the Church has had a significant role within the Kansas City community and Western Episcopal Diocese. This collection consists of records created and maintained by church leaders and parishioners.

The hundredth anniversary of the original incorporation of Kansas City was observed in 1950. A number of activities were held, culminating in a parade and pageant in the summer of 1950. Starlight Theater was built to accomodate the pageant. The scrapbook was assembled by the Kansas City Centennial Association during 1949-1950. It includes primarily the newspaper coverage of the event and some photographs and memorabilia.

This collection contains 59 unique abstracts for residential property located primarily in Johnson County, Kansas, and in the Missouri counties of Jackson and Clay. This property resides in 12 municipalities including Kansas City, Independence, Blue Springs, and Raytown in Missouri as well as in Kansas City, Prairie Village, Topeka, Overland Park, Shawnee, Fairway, Leawood, and Roeland Park in Kansas. The abstracts begin with a record of the early land transactions and most contain related documents to circa 1950-60. They were donated by the First Federal Bank of Kansas City.

SC30-9 The Miracle Scrapbook Finding Aid

Description

"The Miracle," a religious pantomime based on a Christian legend, played in Kansas City from November 22, 1926, to December 11, 1926. The play was presented in Convention Hall which was transformed into a medieval cathedral. Many local people were utilized in the production, and approximately 88,000 people attended. The scrapbook contains primarily newspaper clippings that give thorough coverage to the stage production. The clippings feature advertisements, articles, reviews, feature stories, pictures, local business endorsements with ads, etc. The scrapbook has been photocopied and is available in that format.

This one box, 16 folder collection includes photographs, photocopied correspondence, newspaper clippings, and charts. The 24 photographs in this collection are primarily of Bridger relatives including Bridger's daughter, Virginia. Genealogy charts for the family and correspondence between relatives is also included. There are photographs taken in 1923 of Ezra Meeker and the ruins of Fort Bridger in Wyoming as well as of Oregon Trail remaining ruts.

This collection contains 388 items in black and white with 121 photographs and 267 glass slides. The glass slides were prepared as instructional material for the Kansas City, Missouri School District by their Department of Visual Instruction. Subjects include Kansas City as well as the state of Missouri. The Kansas City related slides include local buildings, sculpture, charitable organizations, parks, streets, the stockyards, and other famous landmarks. Each slide includes a typed identification and some are dated. Those dated are generally from 1935 to 1940.

Richard Corliss was born in Springfield, Massachussetts, in 1915 and moved to Kansas City in 1944. He worked as a freelance photographer, capturing scenes for sale to local news agencies. His collection consists of 46 photographs of varying sizes. Most are black and white. The photographs, shot between approximately 1945 and 1960, are of local personalities and visiting celebrities, accidents, disasters, and other news events. Notable are several photographs of the Truman family after their return to Independence.

The Rev. Robert R. Lakas was born in 1917. He entered the Society of Jesus in 1935 and taught at Rockhurst College from 1955 until his death in 1974. This collection consists mainly of photocopies of newspaper and magazine articles, programs, and typescripts about Fr. Lakas. There are also nine black and white and two color photographs with accompanying information.

The photographer(s) and originator of the scrapbook of 94 photographs of varying sizes are unknown. The images provide scenes of the Board of Trade building under construction as well as exterior and interior views of the glass Exposition Building. Early transportation is depicted by bridges, street cars, trains, railroad stations, etc. The grading of the city, riverfront views, downtown street scenes, groups of people, parades and other special events are also captured in this collection.

In 1908, the Central Presbyterian Church of Kansas City established a settlement house to assist Italian immigrants in the community. Commonly known as the Italian Mission, the initiative grew to offer a kindergarten, free health clinic, recreation center, dual-language publications, and a church to the Italian community and other residents living in Kansas City’s Northeast neighborhood. This collection includes the operational and financial records of the mission and related projects, as well as personal papers of its long-time leader, Dr. John B. Bisceglia, and his family.

This collection consists of a green leather bound photo album stamped with “Marburg” on the front cover. Sepia-tone photographic prints of August Meyer’s home, Marburg, are pasted to black paper pages; the paste has failed on several and these are contained in a separate folder. The structure is now known as Vanderslice Hall and serves as the administrative building of the Kansas City Art Institute.
