Union Depot was on five acres of land with a frontage of 1300 feet on Union Avenue, purchased from Kersey Coates and Charles G. Hopkins. Its architects were Asa B. Cross and William E. Taylor. Construction began on July 16, 1877. On April 7, 1878, the first trains began using the station. The depot was abandoned when the new Union Station opened on October 31, 1914.
