The fountain at Ninth street and the Paseo was one of the beauty spots on the Paseo in the early 1900s. Construction of the thoroughfare was begun in 1898. It was lined with Kansas City's beautiful residences and apartments, some of which stand today. The fountain, known today as a waste fountain, sent its waters high into the air, then as the play of waters ended and they fell to the basin, they wasted away, draining to sewers below. Because of the expense, the fountain was shut down years ago. This summer the fountain will again be used. An underground electrical system will be installed to operate a circulating pump, which will allow the water to be reused. Kansas City Star, May 2, 1970.
