On August 14, 1936, "the mercury hit 113, the highest temperature ever recorded in Kansas City. Temperatures soared to the 100-degree mark or higher on 53 days that summer. And virtually no one had air conditioning in his home." People sought relief by packing blankets, sheets and pillows and driving to Swope Park or Penn Valley Park to spend the night.
