Robert Van Horn Letters

Description: Folder contains several letters written by Robert T. Van Horn. In them he discusses his involvement in the Civil War including where Fort Union was located in downtown Kansas City, as well has his reminiscences of Westport, Santa Fe Trail, and other things.

Note: 'Fort Union' was erected on then open commons at about Tenth and Central Streets, as now located, ample to accommodate 300 men and the necessary stores. This 'fort' remained and was occupied throughout the war, under various commands. And this was all the fort or defensive work constructed until the 'Price Raid' in 1864, in the fall of that year.
