Thomas Swope

Description: Folder contains publication "In Memoriam on the death of Thomas H. Swope, Philanthropist", which contains a poem by G. T. Johnson of Kansas City, Missouri. Also included in the folder is a red badge which contains a picture of Swope and is entitled "Grand Jubilee, Thursday, June 25, 1896", issued in his honor. The vertical files in this collection were formerly a part of the department's regular vertical files.

Note: Thomas H. Swope was born in Kentucky in 1827. He came to Kansas City as a young man and made his fortune in real estate. He gave the city a large track of land for a park which became known as Swope Park. Mr. Swope died in 1909 under mysterious circumstances.
