Kansas City Flood, June 1908 - Union Avenue, Looking West from Union Station is the title of an old post card mailed from Kansas City at the time of the flood. Union Station, usually called the Union Depot, was located at Santa Fe and Union. Several wagon teams make their way, hub deep in water, while a boat full of men using oars travels down the flooded street. The store front signs of Racine Vehicles and Guggenheim & Co. identify two of the many establishments damaged by the swirling waters. Quite understandably plans were started at this time to build a new Union Station on higher ground (and at a more convenient location.) The splendid new $5-million Union Station at Pershing and Main was formally opened six years later on Oct. 20-31, 1914. Kansas City Star, June 25, 1977.
