Photograph of a house at 4224 Washington Street in the early 1980s. This residence was later demolished, and the neighboring house at the right edge of the photo and the St. James Missionary Baptist Church, visible at the left edge, are the only pre-1940 structures remaining on the block, which was part of the historic Steptoe neighborhood, a pre-Civil War African-American neighborhood in the Westport area. The remaining land was reused for a new fire station and a large parking lot.
