The Independence home of the Trumans looked much like a Christmas card the day Harry S. Truman was inaugurated Jan. 20, 1949, as 33rd President of the United States. Icicles add an extra decorative touch to the Victorian scroll woodwork on the porches and roof. The tall iron fence encircling the property today had not yet been installed. An Excelsior Springs Novelty Company which distributed the post card published this legend on the reverse side: “This stately home, located in Independence, Mo., was built 80 years ago. This picture was taken on Inaugural Day and shows the splendor and beauty of the President’s home, with winter’s touch added.” Kansas City Times, 14 December 1972
