This Kansas City view looks west from the top of the YMCA building at 10th and Oak Streets. The YMCA was built in 1909 and opened in January 1910. Henry M. Beardsley, a councilman and later mayor of Kansas City, had declared the Y could raise $250,000 in 30 days. The drive raised $283,000. Beardsley's fund-raising techniques were later adopted by Y's and other organizations throughout the country. The tall building flying the flag at left is the R.A. Long Building. At right center is the Scarritt Building. Both buildings were erected in 1907 and according to Carrie Whitney's history were two of the first three skyscrapers to be erected in Kansas City, the third being the Commerce Trust (not shown). The dome of the old post office at 8th and Grand is seen at far right. In the foreground are old homes of an earlier day, which soon were crowded out to make way for business buildings in the fast-growing city. The card was published by Hall Brothers, and mailed with a green one-cent stamp in March 1911. Y.D. Adair of Lee's Summit furnished the card. Kansas City Times. October 14, 1983
