Lake Hiwassee Now a Distant Memory
-
Description
-
Postcard image of and short article about Lake Hiwassee, a man-made lake formerly located at 63rd and Indiana Lane in the Country Club District. The lake featured two islands connected by rustic bridges with picnic shelters. Developer J.C. Nichols created Lake Hiwassee in the 1920s, as well as Willow Lake (63rd and Ensley), as a recreational destination for families. However, it was eventually filled-in due to frequent incidences of vandalism and debris from flooding.
