The author relates his experiences traveling in the West and Southwest with Bridger in the 1860s as a soldier with the Eleventh Ohio Cavalry at Fort Laramie and back to Fort Kearny. A brief but detailed biographical history of Jim Bridger is also given from the author's recollections, including Bridger's physical description and his life as a mountain scout, said to have started when he left his home in St. Joseph, Missouri, in 1822.
