According to information found in the scrapbook, a military musical was sponsored by the Kansas City Chapter of the DAR at the Whipple home in honor of Battery D. Mrs. Whipple was the sister of Marvin Gates, the company's captain.

According to an advertising announcement in the scrapbook, a military musical to benefit Battery D. Mo. F.A. was held in conjunction with the Kansas City Chapter of the DAR at the Whipple residence located at 4538 Warwick Boulevard. The program included a patriotic pageant, dances, a patriotic address, hymns, drills, etc. Apparently Mrs. Whipple's brother, Marvin Gates, was captain of the Company. Admission was $.50.

The program included a patriotic pageant, dances, a patriotic address, hymns, drills, etc. Apparently Mrs. Whipple's brother, Marvin Gates, was captain of the Company. Admission was $.50. Dance students of Miss Helen Thomes performed and may be included in this image.

In the first paragraph of the article, the author poses these questions: "To what extent was the army used as a peace-maintaining force and to what degree was it truly neutral? If the army was relatively impartial, how can this be explained in view of the fact that officers stationed in Kansas were of both Northern and Southern origins? A brief account of this period of military history may suggest answers to these questions". The article goes on to discuss the vital role the army played in preventing full-scale civil war in the area.
