If the army was relatively impartial, how can this be explained in view of the fact that officers stationed in Kansas were of both Northern and Southern origins? A brief account of this period of military history may suggest answers to these questions". The article goes on to discuss the vital role the army played in preventing full-scale civil war in the area.
