Thirty former Tuskegee Airmen from Missouri and Kansas will be honored on September 8, 2007, in a ceremony held at the Truman Presidential Library in Independence, Mo. Each member will receive a replica of the Congressional Gold Medal presented to the unit by President George W. Bush in March 2007. The keynote speaker will be Colonel Charles E. McGee, former Base Commander at Richards-Gebaur Air Force base.The Tuskegee Airmen were a group of African American fighter pilots who were trained near the small town of Tuskegee, Alabama, during World War II. A reported 450 black airmen fought in aerial battles over North Africa, Sicily, and Europe.

Obituary for John Wilburn Davis, a decorated WWII fighter pilot and a founding member of the Heart of America chapter of the Tuskegee Airmen of America, Inc. Davis flew 53 missions and logged over 640 hours of combat duty during his military career. After WWII, he went on to own a franchise with the Standard Oil Company and would later become the first African American to drive for the Kansas City Public Transportation system.
