Article gives the history of the establishment of the military road from Fort Snelling to Louisiana, with emphasis on the portion between Fort Leavenworth and Fort Gibson in Oklahoma. The whole route was divided into three sections: Northern - Fort Snelling to Fort Leavenworth; Southern - Arkansas River to Fort Towson; and Middle - Fort Leavenworth and the Arkansas River. Includes a map of the whole route, dated June, 1845, "compiled for the U.S. Topographical Bureau and published in Doc. 59, Serial 322; with additional data from a map [1851] accompanying Doc.1, Serial 611". Also has a map which shows the Fort Leavenworth-Fort Scott segment.

Visit the Oldest Home in Kansas

The Rookery building, located at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, was built between 1828 and 1832 and is considered the oldest residence in Kansas. The building "housed the post's soldiers and officers, including Andrew Reeder, the first territorial governor of Kansas, William Clark's stepdaughter and a young lieutenant by the name of Douglas MacArthur, who lived there with his mother." The Rookery is just one of 269 homes at the fort listed on the National Register of Historic Places and one of 66 others that are part of a $3 million preservation project. The home is still lived in but will be open to the public to tour during this week.

New Prison Adds to Fort's Mystique

Fort Leavenworth's new massive $95 million prison complex will replace three military prisons, one at Fort Knox in Kentucky, Fort Sill in Oklahoma, and Lackland Air Force Base in Texas. The new building of the Midwest Joint Regional Correctional Facility has been LEED certified for its environmental design. It has 250,000 square feet with space for 464 beds and sits on 40 acres.
