Photo and bio of General John Joseph Pershing, or John Pershing, "America's Commanding General in France" during World War I and nicknamed Black Jack Pershing. Born in Linn County, Missouri, near Laclede, Missouri, in 1860 and starting out as a teacher and lawyer before entering the military as an Indian fighter in the Southwest in the 1880s-1890s, then engaging in the Spanish-American War before leading troops against Mexican leader Pancho Villa just before World War I and then entering France during the war.
