Streetcars Rolling into Reality
-
Description
-
Two possible routes--one on Main Street and the other on Grand Boulevard--are being considered for a rail line linking Union Station to the River Market area. "For about 20 years, Kansas City has spent millions of dollars trying to develop light-rail plans that covered many miles and reached into different areas of the city. This time, the city is focusing on a 2-mile route centered in downtown." Includes a color-coded map of the two possible routes. The "modern" streetcar, that looks like a light-rail train, would be employed on the route. The project could cost between $60 million and $100 million.

Commuter Rail Plan Receives $1.8 Million
-
Description
-
The federal grant "will fund two commuter rail studies" one from downtown Kansas City along Interstate 70 to Independence and Blue Springs, and one on an abandoned rail line toward Raytown and Lee's Summit," and it will also pay "to study a downtown streetcar line from the River Market to Union Station." Although other rail studies have been done in the area before since 1993, this study is supposed be different. 'The alignment is slightly different and the plan includes a different kind of commuter rail vehicle than what has been studied before."

P26 Transportation Photograph Scrapbook Finding Aid
-
Description
-
The collection includes 549 negatives and 318 original prints of images taken in the 1910s focusing on railroads and transportation and rural and urban life. The geographic scope is the Midwest, primarily Missouri and Kansas. The railroad photographs pertain to the Atchison, Topeka, and Santa Fe Railroad line. Scenes of both eastern Jackson County and Kansas City are common. The most striking features are the modes of transportation used at the time: the railroads, the newly evolving automobile, the street car, the interurban to Excelsior Springs, river boats, and an early airplane taking off in Overland Park.
