The Union Station Construction Photographs collection consists of 49 photographs of Kansas City’s Union Station and corresponding infrastructure while under construction. The photos are identified, dated between 1910-1911, and offer insight into the scope of work put into the building that would serve as the primary transportation hub of Kansas City into the middle of the 20th century.

A dedication ceremony was held on May 8, 2008, at Union Station for the Union Depot sign. The Union Depot, located in the West Bottoms, opened in April 1878. "The stone was placed directly above the main entrance to the depot, and stood 125 feet high. The Union Depot closed in 1914 and was demolished a year later." After demolition, the sign, which is the only known surviving artifact from the depot, was moved to Kansas City, Kansas. Includes image.

Union Depot Lives on in Exhibit

The 131-year-old doorway stone from the Union Depot is now on display at Union Station. Union Depot was located in the West Bottoms and torn down in 1915 after being replaced by Union Station. The piece, inscribed with "Union Depot 1877," is the only known item left from the building. "Also on display at Union Station is a 35-foot-long drawing on linen dated 1904 for the Union Depot Co. titled 'Alternate Plan No. 4'." The doorway stone was salvaged and found its way to a business at 1010 Kansas Avenue in Kansas City, Kansas. The current business owner donated the stone to Union Station in exchange for a copy.
