Born in Germany as Johann Augustus Suter and emigrating to Westport in 1837 on the way to the far west, buying a storehouse ("Lucas & Kavanaugh") and farm home near the later Uptown Theater (later the home of Allen McGee) and then moving to Oregon and California in 1838.
