Photo and bio of Reverend Nathan Scarritt (1821-1890), an anti-slavery minister and "benefactor" of Kansas City. Native of Illinois moving to Fayette, Missouri in 1845 before becoming a teacher in 1848 at "the Indian Manual Labor School in the Shawnee country, Indian Territory." Principal of the Westport high school starting in 1852, school teacher in Kansas City in 1864-1865, pastor of several area churches, and real estate investor owning land on the later Scarritt Point in Northeast Kansas City.

Photo and bio of John Perry, co-founder of the Keith & Perry Coal Company (changed in 1890 to the Central Coal & Coke Company) in Kansas City in 1890 and of the Perry Memorial Home for orphan boys in Westport. Born in England in 1850 and emigrating to Fort Scott, Kansas, in 1869 as a coal investor, then forming his partnership with Richard Keith in 1886 and coming to Kansas City in 1888, building the Keith & Perry Building.

Nehemiah Holmes

Portrait and biographical sketch of Nehemiah Holmes (1826-1873), "one of the most progressive citizens of Kansas City during its formative period, and founder of the street railway system of that city." He was a native of New York coming to Kansas City in 1856 as a civil engineer and becoming a realtor and banker. Includes a description of his career, establishing the Mechanics' Bank in Saint Louis in 1856 with a branch here, "the second banking house established in Kansas City," building the Kansas City & Westport Horse Railway about 1870, and acting as "prime mover in the organization and building of the Jackson County Horse Railway," until "the completion of its western end from Main Street to the Union Depot" in 1873, the year of his death.
