Sutter In Westport: Prelude For a Pioneer, Part I
-
Description
-
The author states in the beginning of the article that "historians have largely relied again and again on just a few (not unbiased) chroniclers to depict Sutter's 1836-1838 Westport experience. Fortunately a large number of contemporary sources, hitherto untapped, provide for a fairly detailed account of Sutter's life in this Missouri frontier town." Included are thumbnail sketches of people Sutter interacted with while in Jackson County, information on the German-speaking communities in which Sutter lived and the Native Americans with which he transacted business.
