Six routes taken by explorers and emigrants are labeled, including the Oregon Trail, which has numbers along it denoting the distance in miles from Westport Landing, Missouri. At the time of its publication, the map had an extensive key listing the numbered buildings, most of which has been removed. Steamboats traveling along the Missouri River can be seen. The map displays the steep bluffs and topography of the region. It also indicates Kansas City's expansion southward away from the Missouri River, the development of the stockyards industry in the West Bottoms and interconnectivity with the surrounding cities and towns that followed completion of the Hannibal Bridge in 1869.

The map illustrates an area with specific planning guidelines from Westport Road south to 45th and 46th Streets, and Terrace and Mercier Streets east to roughly Jarboe. Area plans, dealing with transportation, development, and zoning, among other factors, were developed over time for a number of Kansas City areas and are intended to provide guidance for their growth and design.
