Portrait and biographical sketch of Dr. Johnston Lykins (1800-1876), a physician, Baptist missionary, realtor, the first legal mayor of Kansas City (from 1853 to 1855), and native of Virginia. Description of his life and career, coming to Jackson County, Missouri, in 1831 as a missionary "in charge of the first post office west of Independence" that year with first residence two miles south of Westport, then buying land on Broadway from Louis Bartholet about 1836 and building a warehouse at the Levee there, as well as his first Kansas City home at 2nd and Walnut and his second at 12th and Broadway (later moved to 12th and Washington Streets, renovated into a hotel, and then demolished).
