The high school was built in 1908, and the middle school was built in 1924 as a junior high school, and served as Kansas City Junior College from 1942 to 1969, and then a temporary location for Manual High School from 1969 to 1977, then returned to use as a junior high, and later middle, school. Both school buildings were closed by the Kansas City School District in 2010, and sold to private developers in 2014.

The plans call for converting the schools into market-rate apartments, buildings for independent senior housing, or to reuse Westport High School as a private school and the middle school as a center for nonprofit organizations. Both schools, along with 28 others, were closed in 2010 due to declining enrollment.
