The image depicts the clash between Union and Confederate forces that took place in Westport, Missouri on October 23, 1864. The original mural was completed in 1920 and is displayed in the Missouri State Capitol in Jefferson City.

The church was dedicated in October 1896, and the congregation has been called the oldest in Kansas City, initially meeting in the home of William Chick in 1836, and the original building on the site constructed in 1853.

The building was designed by Shepard & Wiser and built in 1923. It was demolished in early 1998 and the site used for a parking lot.
