Solomon Nunes Carvalho accompanied John Fremont on his fifth western expedition. He went in order to document the trip through the newly emerging medium of photography. Expedition members came up the Missouri River and arrived in Westport in September 1853. Description of their time there and of the start of the journey. Also includes a description of both the first and newer Bent's Fort as visited in 1853.
