40 Years, Mostly of Miracles
-
Description
-
In-depth article about Operation Breakthrough and the two women, Sister Berta Sailer and Sister Corita Bussanmas, that began the child care center in 1971 to provide child care to the poor. The Catholic diocese wanted to close the St. Vincent's school on the corner of Flora and 31st Street, but Sailer and Bussanmas "told the diocese they would run the school themselves." They decided to open a nursery and pre-school and called it Operation Breakthrough--to break through poverty. The two women have been to Washington, D.C., to talk about urban child care and have met Hillary Clinton and Michelle Obama. For their 40th anniversary, they are holding a "Family Reunion" street festival at 3039 Troost Ave where the center is now located.
