Stockyards history: (1871) organized as the "Kansas Stockyards Company" with the first Live Stock Exchange Building erected; (1876) reorganized as the "Kansas City Stockyards Company"; (1886) Kansas City Live Stock Exchange organized; (1951) most of the Stockyards area wiped out by the flood and the development of Kemper Arena and Interstate 670; (post-1975) the remaining 35 acres sold to National Farms, Incorporated, to be demolished and become part of a planned office park project.

The Kansas City Stockyards operated in the West Bottoms of Kansas City from 1871 to 1991. It was the second largest stockyards in the nation and one of Kansas City's most important industries. This collection documents the natural and built environment of the Kansas City Stockyards and West Bottoms from 1828-1983. It is a mostly oversized collection of blueprints, maps, architectural drawings, land abstracts, photos, and correspondence. Some items from this collection have been digitized and are available to view in the "Stockyards" Digital Collection, http://www.kchistory.org/digital-collections.

A Bit of the Real Cowtown

Article spotlights a large of collection of documents, blueprints, and other materials pertaining to the old Kansas City Stockyards that is currently being processed by the Missouri Valley Special Collections department of the Kansas City Public Library. The documents were donated to the Library in 2008 by Bill Haw, owner of the Livestock Exchange Building, who first discovered them when he purchased the building in 1991. A preliminary inventory of the collection was funded by Henry Marder, of Mission, KS, and a grant by the Council on Library and Information Services is funding a project archivist to catalog and preserve the materials. Some of the items are currently on display at the Central Library in an exhibit titled "Cowtown: History of the Kansas City Stockyards."
