Portrait of J. H. B. Dunnegin in suit and tie with a medal pinned to the left breast. According to the "History of Hickory, Polk, Cedar, Dade and Barton Counties, Missouri" (1889), James J. Akard's mother's maiden name was Dunnegan. The correct spelling is not known, but written on the back is, "J. H. B. Dunnegin."

After the war he was elected to the state legislature and held other important Polk County positions including sheriff, collector and clerk of the county court. He died in 1919. James J. Akard was born July 7, 1838, in Polk County, Missouri. He was captain of Company A, Eighth Missouri State Militia Cavalry during the Civil War. After the war he was elected to the state legislature and held other important Polk County positions including sheriff, collector and clerk of the county court. He died in 1919. Handwritten on the back reads: "John Akard." The back side has an ornate design surrounding and with part of the text: "Instantaneous/Process/Used Exclusively/ Artistic/J. B. Drake,/Photography/Ground Floor Studio,/ Bolivar,/ Mo./Duplicates can be had at anytime."

A handwritten line is drawn through the Furlong name and handwritten below is "Crowther Bros." According to "The History of Buchanan County, Missouri," (1881) J. A. Storm, architect, was a long-time partner in "contracting and building with John C. Evans," but "in 1865, he sold out to DeClue & Shivel, and for one season, in company with W. Angelo Powell, conducted a real estate and architect's office" (p. 908).

After the war he was elected to the state legislature and held other important Polk County positions including sheriff, collector and clerk of the county court. He died in 1919. Akard's wife's name was Keziah Adeline (September 11, 1847-November 2, 1925). His daughters were Ella May, the eldest, and Della E. On the reverse is written in faded ink, "....& Mrs. J. J. Akard, Fair Play, Mo."

Much of the material in the collection relates to Company A, 8th Cavalry Regiment, Missouri State Militia.
