The Kansas City Art Institute is the winner of the 2009 Missouri Arts Award for arts education. The Missouri Arts Award is the state's highest honor in the arts." The Art Institute began in 1885 and "is the oldest arts organization in the Kansas City area, and is the only institution of higher learning in the seven-state region devoted exclusively to visual arts education. The school is expanding to an additional location called the Northland Campus for Special Programs, in the Briarcliff Professional Plaza, at the junction of Highway 9 and Briarcliff Parkway in Riverside, Missouri.

Plans Change for Arts Program

MyARTS, a program established five years ago to keep kids off drugs, was based in the Crossroads Arts District, but will move its headquarters to Independence while maintaining part of it in Kansas City. In addition to moving, MyARTS is going to merge with a "sister program, Sentenced to the Arts, which rehabilitates young offenders." The Jackson County Legislature "voted in 2010 to move it from leased space at 1522 Holmes St. to a county-owned building at 315 N. Main St. in Independence."

The nonprofit organization began in 2001 and depends almost solely on volunteers. Classes and performances are held in this former three-story school building as well as art exhibits from the spring until the day after Halloween when they close for the winter.
