Excerpts of the Civil War battlefield diary of Brigadier-General John Philips (1814-1886), a participant in the Battle of Westport on the Union side and later national representative of Missouri.
Byram's Ford, a familiar name in local Civil War history, was named after brothers Peter and Augustus Byram who came to this area from western Kentucky in 1839. Before the war, Santa Fe freighters crossed the Blue River at this ford. Peter married Emma Meeker, daughter of the Rev. Jotham Meeker, early Baptist missionary to the Indians in Kansas.
