Old-Is-New Brew Awakens KC's Tastebuds and Heritage
-
Description
-
Column laments the loss of a once popular beer in this country. It includes information concerning the Schlitz brand and its relationship to Kansas City. Schlitz was once the king of beers, and its "dominance began in 1956 with the purchase of the hometown Muehlebach brewery. Schlitz sponsored Kansas City A's radio broadcasts. Atop the scoreboard at Municipal Stadium, there was a Schlitz billboard, even when the Royals played there." In 1973 this brand was the local top seller. But the company tinkered with their recipe and sales declined. Just before this happened, Schiltz closed their brewery located at 316 Oak Street in Kansas City.
