Photo and bio of Thomas B. Bullene, or Thomas Bullene (1828-1894), mayor of Kansas City in 1882 and owner of "one of the most widely known establishments in the West," the dry goods store of Bullene, Moore & Emery, starting out as Coates & Gillis and later becoming Emery, Bird, Thayer & Company, moved from 7th and Main Streets to 11th and Walnut Streets in 1891. Description of Bullene's life, moving from New York to Iowa to Kansas City in 1863, involved in "the best interests of Kansas City, joining in many promotions: waterways, railroads and civic improvements," dedicating the Fat Stock Show and Andrew Drips Park and serving as president of the Kansas City Railroad Company in 1880.

Portrait and biographical sketch of Thomas Brockway Bullene, or Thomas Bullene, usually referred to as T. B. Bullene, born in Hannibal, New York, in 1828. Description of his career as a merchandiser, starting in Wisconsin with his brother Lathrop Bullene, then moving in 1856 to Iowa and then in 1863 to Kansas City. The business of Coates and Bullene became "the nucleus of the present firm of Bullene, Moore and Emery," changing into the Bullene Brothers with its Lawrence, Kansas, branch store destroyed in the Civil War. It turned into the Bullene Brothers and Emery in 1867 and in 1870, Bullene, Moore and Emery, with a new store building built in 1871 "fronting on Main, Delaware and Eighth streets," then in 1872 technically changed again to Bullene, Moores and Emery, with the joining of another Moore brother. Later became Emery, Bird, Thayer Company.

Charles S. Stevenson was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, in 1895, but grew up in Olathe, Kansas, and Kansas City, Missouri. He worked at Hallmark Cards from the end of World War I until 1960. After retirement he became a free-lance writer for the Kansas City Star. He was very active in local social, civic, and military affairs. He died in 1985 in Kansas City, Missouri.<br><br> The collection provides information on the first 48 mayors of Kansas City, Missouri, serving the city between 1853-1971. The papers represent the files that Mr. Stevenson kept while he was writing a series of articles concerning Kansas City mayors which appeared in the Kansas City Star and Times in 1975-1976. Items found in the folders include rough drafts and final drafts of the articles, personal notes, photocopied newspaper clippings, and correspondence. The personal correspondence includes letters from relatives of some of the former mayors.
