Article spotlights Kansas City residents Jason and Candy Fields and other families who have transformed blighted properties in the Lykins Neighborhood into "urban homesteads." More than 20 families have purchased homes in the neighborhood, creating a sustainable and self-sufficient living model through farming and other food production. Many of these residents are former suburbanites and members of the Rock, a non-denominational Christian church whose members establish house churches in the urban core so they can better serve those communities.

Looking north along Main Street from 12th Street. On the right is the southwest corner of the Jones Store building. Harzfeld's Department Store is visible one block south, and signs for King Joy Lo Restaurant, Liggett's Drugs, B & G Hosiery, Newman Theater, and Berkson's line the west side of the street from south to north. The block on the west side of Main was razed in the early 1970s and now occupied by City Center Square.

A Grand Centennial for a Grand Church

The Grand Avenue Temple United Methodist Church (205 E. 9th St., southeast corner of 9th Street and Grand Boulevard) was completed February 1912. It is the second church building that the United Methodist Church built in that location. Today the church is home to the "inderdenominational Lazarus Ministries, which provides clothing, meals, a health clinic, a library and a women's shelter to Kansas City's urban core. Many of the 200 or so worshippers at the Sunday service are homeless." Article gives some history of the building and church.

"Essentially a reinvention of the philosophies under which most cities were settled in the early 20th century, New Urbanism promotes a mixture of amenities in close proximity to one another, allowing people access to their daily needs--without the need of the car." The first New Urban community offering walkable, connected streets and gathering places was Seaside, Florida.
