Along with the article is a chart with the deadliest fires in Missouri history: Feb. 17, 1957: Katie Jane Nursing Home in Warrenton, 72 dead; March 9, 1914: Missouri Athletic Club and Bank building in St. Louis, 37 dead; April 2, 1979: Wayside Inn board and care home in Farmington, 25 dead; and January 28, 1978: Coates House fire in KC, 20 dead.

In 1868 the hotel at 10th and Broadway was completed at a cost of $20,000, by Colonel S. W. Eldridge. It was operated for a period following its completion by Eldridge's brother, Major Thomas B. Eldridge, who called it the Broadway Hotel. In 1870 Kersey Coates and John R. Balis bought the hotel and renamed it the Coates House.
