Title: Bad Medicine: Medical Knowledge and Practice of the Upper Missouri Fur Trade
Description: The article begins with a summary of various medicines and medical practices used by fur traders on the North American frontier. The next section is a transcription of various portions of Robert Thomas' Modern Domestic Medicine, published in 1829. The transcribed sections contain lists of drugs, herbs, and chemicals in use at the time and their various effects. The following section are transcribed portions of supply inventories from Fort Union from 1831-1834. The inventories describe medicines and their definitions. The next section is a list of patent medicines and their definitions taken from the same Fort Union inventories. The final section is a transcribed portion of a letter written by the Commissioner of Indian Affairs at Fort Union in 1859. The transcribed portion is a list of so-called Indian medicines and brief descriptions of their use at Fort Union during the period.
