Judge is Found Dead in His Home

Judge Cordell D. Meeks, Jr., who served on the Wyandotte County District Court was found dead on June 28, 2006. His father, Cordell D. Meeks, Sr., was the first African-American District court judge in Kansas. Cordell Meeks, Jr., served on the boards of numerous groups and civic organizations. "In 1999 he became the first African-American to serve on the board of the Truman Museum, a position he considered an honor because his father had been a friend of the president. In 2001 he was elected president of the American Lung Association." Includes his picture.

The newspaper recently tried to have readers decide what the area's Seven Wonders were from a list of 21 possibilities. Over 2,000 ballots arrived and the winners were: (1) Country Club Plaza, (2) Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, (3) Community of Christ Temple, (4) Union Station, (5) Truman Presidential Museum and Library/Truman homes, (6) Liberty Memorial, and (7) Fountains & Boulevards. The article also lists the 21 selections in order by ranking.
