Longtime Truman Library Chief Dies
-
Description
-
Benedict K. Zobrist, former director of the Truman Library, died April 19, 2007, at the age of 85. He was director from 1971 through 1994. The article states that "it was Zobrist's task to see that Truman's office papers, originally not part of the library's holdings, were acquired" and he "sought out hundreds of Truman administration officials scattered across the country, asking that their documents be made available." Zobrist also worked to reinvent the library for a new generation of Americans who had no personal memory of Truman. A renovation of the library began just as he was leaving as director. He very much wanted the library to be an educational facility and not a shrine to Truman. Includes his picture.
