Description

Article on Jeffrey Deroine, an African-American fur trader and interpretor with the Ioway Agency. Born a slave in St. Louis, Missouri in 1804, Deroine spent his adolescence working as a fur trader for his owner, Joseph Robidoux. After Deroine's freedom was bought in 1832, he began work as an Office of Indian Affairs interpretor with the Ioway Agency, accompanying tribal leaders on trips to treaty negotiations and a publicity tour of Europe. Upon returning to the U.S., Deroine became caught up in a power struggle between the Office of Indian Affairs and the Ioway leadership, resulting in him being banned from the Agency. He died in March 1859 in St. Joseph, Missouri.
