Bio of Samuel Owens (1800-1847), a native of Kentucky coming to Jackson County, Missouri, before 1827 and becoming the first Jackson County treasurer. In Independence a leading Santa Fe trader with a general store there. Killed in the Mexican War in 1847 in California.

Brief, humorous piece relating several details of research by the Missouri State Archives and Jackson County, Missouri, officials in 2005, in which court records were discovered pertaining to the 1833 destruction of the Independence offices of the Evening and Morning Star, a Mormon newspaper. The author points out that Samuel Owens and Benjamin Majors are named among the codefendents in the case, the former being the proprietor of Owen's Landing east of Independence, and the latter being the father of Alexander Majors, partner in the Russell, Majors and Waddell freighting firm.
