The Robert Louis Stevenson Condominiums are located at the corner of Jefferson Street and Ward Parkway near the Country Club Plaza. This older apartment building was designed by local woman architect Nelle Peters and is seven stories high. The condos start at $140,000. The building has been completely renovated and still features the detailed crown moldings and sun proches.

Eight self-portrait ceramic head sculptures done by Kansas City Art Institute students sit perched on the roofline of an apartment building at 48th and Jefferson called Vanity Fair. The heads were glued in place by apartment owner Don Anderson. The apartment building was designed by Nelle E. Peters and is part of the Poets Group located near the Country Club Plaza and is in a historic district. The city's Landmark Commission now wants the heads taken down.

Evil Twins Receive a Reprise

Story features the Hillcrest Apartments near the intersection of Gladstone Boulevard and St. John Avenue. The buildings have been vacant since a fire in August of 2001 and are referred to by persons in the neighborhood as the "evil twins". The structures were designed by Nelle Peters in 1922 and in recent years have had many code violations. The apartments are located in the Scarritt Renaissance Neighborhood in the northeast area of the city.

Photo and bio of Nelle Elizabeth Nichols Peters, or Nelle Peters (1884-1974), an early woman architect in Kansas City designing mainly hotel and apartment buildings. Native of North Dakota coming to Kansas City in 1909 shortly before opening her own office, marrying William Peters ("a designer for the Kansas City Terminal Railroad"), and forming an association with Charles Phillips, owner of the real estate development business of the Phillips Building Company.
