The controversial bronze statue, Modern Communication, was created by Terry Allen and unveiled on September 8, 1995, in the courtyard in front of the police communications headquarters building and the Municipal Court on Locust between 12th and 11th streets. "This bronze statue depicts a businessman standing atop his briefcase with his eyes covered by his tie, his fingers in his ears, and a shoe in his mouth" (from "American Institute of Architects Guide to Kansas City Architecture and Public Art," 2000).

Article on the success of the new nurse program at Police Headquarters. Initiated by Chief Darryl Forte and Mike Schumacher, the program provides for nurses to staff Police Headquarters and treat inmates complaining of medical issues. The on-site nurse evaluations have cut down on the number of ambulances called to Police Headquarters and the number of escape attempts by inmates from ambulances, and have caught serious medical issues as well.
