On January 29, 1861, Kansas was admitted to the Union as the 34th state after the secession of many southern states. Governor Robinson made his first address to the legislature on March 30, 1861, and a condensed version of that message was published in this issue of "Kansas History" to commemorate the Kansas statehood sesquicentennial.
