The folder contains a large mounted cartoon drawing done by S.J. Ray entitled "Almost Like One of the Family" and depicts the passing of Will Rogers. On the back is an attached letter dated Dec. 23,1935, addressed to Mr.[Purd] Wright from S.J. Ray. The letter indicates that Mr. Ray would be pleased to leave the cartoon as a gift. The vertical files in this collection were formerly a part of the department's regular vertical files.

This small collection consists of photocopied newspaper clippings of some of the political cartoons of S. J. Ray of the Kansas City Star. The clippings were originally in one scrapbook and have been removed and photocopied and arranged as found in the scrapbook. There is a total of 93 cartoons dating from the Fall of 1937 to March of 1938 and they are contained in four folders. Most all include the date with the clipping. The collection has the accession number of 2005-57 and was processed in January, 2006. The cartoon subject matter features primarily national issues including Franklin Roosevelt and the New Deal, labor problems, Hitler and Nazism, Congress, the Supreme Court, Japan, the economy, etc. There are a few cartoons which relate to local issues and these are Numbers 4,9,14,33,43-46, 62,65, and 82.

This collection contains original artwork and other materials relating to S. J. Ray, who worked as editorial cartoonist for The Kansas City Star from 1931 to 1963. Ray’s cartoons depict a wide array of historical figures and events, including New Deal politics, World War II, and the Cold War.
